Advice for those travelling to Budapest for surgery

USEFUL THINGS TO BRING WITH YOU

• Mobile phone (roaming enabled) and charger
• Laptop (passes the time like nothing else!) and mains plug/charger
• Camera (for your sightseeing trips) and battery charger
• Ipod or MP3 player
• Euro-adaptors (3 pin to continental 2 pin) for the above equipment
• DVDs, books and magazines (although obtainable in Budapest magazine and newspapers are very expensive)
• If so inclined, knitting or embroidery - a very relaxing way of passing the time!

• Your must-have favourite brand of tea bags/coffee/cereal - if you can't live without them! (although you can buy most things here they are not always available at all times – and although there are several Tesco supermarkets they are not in the centre of town and you don’t really want to be travelling out to them just before or after surgery!

• Nightwear that is loose and comfortable, and if having facial or breast surgery, that buttons down the front (and does not require pulling over your head).
• Loose comfy clothing for going to and from the hospital/clinic.  You cannot pull on tight jeans or trousers after Tummy Tuck surgery - or after liposuction - as you will be swollen and sore and might still have drains as well as the support/compression garments - similarly button-down or zipped tops are recommended for after facial/breast surgeries (again that do not need to be pulled over your head).
• Slippers and flat shoes that are easy to get on and off as there should be no bending down after surgery.  Also you might be still slightly woozy from the anaesthetic and could trip if wearing high heeled shoes.
• Comfy flat shoes for walking around the town and sightseeing.
• Lightweight robe/dressing gown.
• Whatever the time of year a brolly!

• Digital thermometer (to check for any fever or infection).
• Your favourite tried and trusted brand of painkillers (plenty of pharmacies in Budapest but they may not carry your preferred brand). Remember though - no aspirin,ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory medication.
• Baby wipes/hand wipes for cleansing when you cannot bath or shower.
• Gentle body lotions/facial lotions/shampoos preferably perfume-free as skin can be sensitive post surgery
• Baby shampoo is recommended for hair washing after facial surgery
• Dry shampoo for when you do not feel like washing your hair (not recommended for facial surgery patients).
• Eyemask/neck pillow if you have trouble sleeping.
• Sunglasses - the sun can be fierce in Budapest in the summer and also during late summer/early autumn is quite low - for those having any facial or eyelid surgery large sunglasses are a must (try to bring ones that are comfortable and will fit easily over your bandages).
• For summertime patients a wide-brimmed hat that is not tight on your head -important if having face or eyelid surgery to keep all sun off your face.  All year round for facial/eyelid surgery patients - large non-itchy scarves/shawls for covering bandages and neck.

• Any current prescription medications (which should have been noted down on your Linda Briggs in Hungary health Questionnaire).  It is most important that you bring everything you might need with you as if you forget your medication we cannot guarantee that exactly the same drug/s will be available here - and also it could be very expensive (cost of a private doctor plus the medication itself).
• List of any questions you might want to ask your surgeon.
• Any current X-rays, blood test results, medical reports, and certified Blood group (if available).  Any pre-op tests required by your surgeon will be carried out in Budapest prior to your surgery.
• Your European Health Insurance card.  The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) allows you to access state-provided healthcare in all European Economic Area (EEA) countries and Switzerland at a reduced cost or sometimes free of charge. Everyone who is resident in the UK should have one and carry it with them when travelling in Europe. The EHIC is valid for up to five years.  Remember to check it's still valid before you travel  If you do not already have a card you can apply for one, free of charge, at www.ehic.org.uk.  The EHIC is valid for up to five years. • Travel insurance documents giving policy number and contact phone numbers (please be aware that most insurance companies offering normal travel insurance protection do not cover those going abroad for surgery - you will need to contact a specialist company - please refer to: http://www.lindabriggs.co.uk/insurance.htm
