Smartlipo recovery and post op instructions

|
Following your stand alone Smartlipo surgery under general anaesthesia, you will be required to stay in the clinic for a short period for observation, where you will be monitored and checked by
the nursing staff.
You will be drowsy, but will receive pain medication as necessary. After resting for a few hours the surgeon will then decide if you can leave or should stay overnight. If having combination or other procedures at the same time, you will not be able to leave and will remain in the clinic for one night.

- After the surgeon has checked you and declared you fit to leave, you will be taken back to your hotel or apartment, and if necessary will be given pain relief in tablet form, which should see you through the next 2-3 days. After this, you should not require pain relief, but if you do, you should use non-prescription paracetamol (no aspirin, ibuprofen or anti-inflammatory
medication). The surgeon also requests that you do not use arnica tablets.
- You will be given a Discharge Letter/Report prepared by your surgeon, which you should keep with you ,and on your return home put safely away with other important health/medical documents - if you should develp any complications, then your doctor will need to see this letter.
- You must keep wearing the support/compression garment, as this is very important for your recovery. These garments encourage healing by preventing the affected tissues from moving after the Smartlipo procedure, and can also help prevent your blood from clotting.
You must wear this 24/7 for the
first week. Your surgeon will advise you how long you should keep this on after this - usually for 3-4 weeks. For the first few days you should not remove it even to shower.
- After returning to your accommodation, you should rest as and when you feel it is necessary, but in between periods of rest movement is necessary to promote circulation - but please limit this to minor activities only.
- Do not shower/bath for the first few days after surgery, and after this shower/bath in warm and not hot water. Take care when removing/replacing the support garment and also whilst showering (some people find it easier and safer to shower sitting down on a stool or chair) Afterwards replace
the support garment.

- It is also recommended that you do not drink alcohol for the first 2-3 days post surgery - and then if you do, that you keep your consumption to a reasonable amount. Also it is important that you do not smoke for at least 2-3 weeks after surgery.
- After Smartlipo there may be minor bruising and some numbness, but these effects, if present, should disappear within 1-2 weeks.
- The swelling will start to go down after a week and you should be able to resume your normal activities with care.
- Physical exercise such as gym workouts, weight training, and also sports should only be resumed after 2-3 weeks but your surgeon will advise you on this - so please check.
- You should not go in the sauna or have any massage for 2-3 weeks following Smartlipo surgery.

The results of your Smartlipo should be completely visible at around 3-4 months.
